When Moses led the Israelites out Egypt, they met an enemy, the Amalekites. They wanted to scare the Israel people back to the Egyptian slavery. Moses commanded to go out to meet them and fight against them. Joshua and the Israelites went out for a war against the Amalekites and they won. However, what is interesting in this war is the way they won the victory.

Even though Joshua and the Israelites went out for the war and fought against the Amalekites, the victory was not achieved by their bravery or the weapons they used. The key for the victory was in Moses who was far away from the battle. Moses was on a mountain and watching the results of the war. When he raised his arms up, the Israel people came to win and when he let his hands down the Amalekites began to win.

Exodus 17:10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

The result of the battle depended solely on the hands of Moses. Moses was the key figure for the battle. Even though he was physically away from the battle, he had a decisive impact for the battle. The bible says that everything was written to teach us a lesson. Then what is the lesson that we should learn from this battle? When we started our spiritual journey of faith toward the heaven, many things happen to scare us back to the previous life especially in the beginning stage of the journey. We might have to deal with many troubles. But what we have to remember is that the fights do not belong to us. Actually, it is God who is fighting for us. When we trust in God, we can win the spiritual battle.
